The GERSTEL Olfactory Detection Port allows olfactory detection of compounds using the human nose. Olfactory detection is performed in parallel to GC detection with FID, FPD or MSD detectors as compounds elute from the GC column. The effluent is split as it leaves the column, arriving simultaneously at the nose and at the detector, enabling the analyst to gain additional information on odor-active compounds. Using a headset with a microphone coupled to voice recognition software, the analyst can insert spoken comments directly into the  chromatogram for peak annotation and into the analysis report.

The GERSTEL ODP 2 is a GC accessory that is used for olfactory detection and determination of odor-active compounds parallel to GC analysis.
